Inauguration Optimism

Did you watch the inauguration this morning? What a moving experience it was! I got a little teary-eyed when Aretha Franklin sang "My Country Tis of Thee". Even the boys took notice that something special was happening. Mister stopped his hammering of blocks to watch and Pumpkin ceased his Cheerio-throwing from his high chair, both riveted on the tv. It really brought home how grateful I am to be a citizen of this great country. And the national anthem always gives me chills and chokes me up. To hear that beautiful song about how our country came to be and see all those millions of American flags waving proudly really made me emotional.

My family is made up almost entirely of people who are left-of-center politically, leaving me, Scott and my dad Peter as the conservative outsiders. And my mother (jokingly) wonders where she went wrong in raising a Republican like myself. But although I consider myself a conservative and happily voted for John McCain, I am excited about having Barack Obama as our new president. I think he is an inspirational person who will do wonderful things for our country. Some of my more conservative friends and relatives wonder how I can be so excited about this new president. I guess I'm caught in the middle. Some call him a socialist. Others see him as our country's savior. I don't agree with either extreme and I hope all those on the left haven't put too much pressure on him to fix every problem we have. He won't be able to fix everything quickly. I haven't totally made up my mind about his politics but I agree with him on many points and disagree vehemently on others. Overall though, I am feeling very optimistic and am excited about this new president. I wish him the best and pray that he will be successful in his endeavors to turn our flailing economy around.

Kiel and Lauren are so lucky to live in the DC area to be able to take part in all these celebrations. It must be such an amazing experience to live history in the making. Even as a conservative I wish I could be there to take part in this moment in time. And if a Bush-lover and conservative like me is this excited about it, I can only imagine my mom's and siblings' feelings. I know my mom and other siblings would've loved to be there too. I've watched them endure the Bush years with gritted teeth (they're not fans...) and then to see how happy they were for this turnaround, I wish we could all be there to take part in the festivities. Oh well. We're just going to have to content ourselves with front-row couch seats while Kiel and Lauren get to live it up at the RIAA inaugural ball. Not that I'm jealous or anything! :)

Ok, I know that this blog post has been totally rambling, but I'm just emotional and excited and caught up in the moment. I'm proud to be an American. We live in the best country in the world. God Bless President Obama.

And PS: HOW CUTE ARE THOSE OBAMA GIRLS?! I wanted to pinch Sasha's cheeks she's so stinkin' cute! And Michelle looked beautiful! What a good-looking first family!

I loved this post. Although there are many people who's political views I don't personally agree with, I wholeheartedly believe that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and to believe what they want to believe. I hope your optimism turns infectious and spreads throughout our country. No matter which candidate won this election, they needed to prepare themself for a tremendous uphill climb to help pull America out of the valley we have sunken into. This is a wonderful place to live and Obama was so right yesterday when he said we still have everything we need to climb to the top- we just need to start the ascent. As said so eloquently yesterday, he is taking the highest oath during one of America's lowest times... and I have so much faith that we can grow and become so much stronger. Will it happen overnight? Will it even happen in four years? Most likely not, but I'm hoping that this Change in leadership can give everyone the optimism and much-needed boost we need to get to that point.

I feel the exact same way... and you're not the only Republican in the family! I may be covered in tattoos, but I am a conservative too!
