Memorial Day

Yesterday we wanted to do something meaningful for Memorial Day instead of just treating it like another day off. We recently found out that we have a National Cemetery here in the metro area, so we decided that it was the perfect destination to teach our kids about the real meaning of Memorial Day and why it's such a special day. We missed the 10am ceremony, but it was still an amazing and humbling experience.

Every single grave in the entire cemetery had an American flag on it. And it's a huge cemetery. We drove and drove for a while before finally parking. Then we walked and walked and walked. There were graves and American flags waving in the breeze as far as the eye could see. While Mister seemed to grasp the concept of Memorial Day, it went over Pumpkin's head for the most part. At one point we walked by the assembly area where they'd had the ceremony and some Air Force airmen were still lingering. Mister walked right up to the front and gave one of them a high five. He was so excited he got to do that.

All in all, it was a wonderful experience and one we'd like to make a family tradition from now on. It's so important to honor and remember the men and women in the military. The sacrifices that they (and their families) make are incredible and hard to imagine.Whether they're active, retired or veterans,  they deserve our respect and gratitude and I'm determined to instill that in our boys' hearts and minds from a young age.

What a great way to teach the boys the meaning of Memorial Day! The boys are very lucky to have such thoughtful... and creative ... parents!
