Workout Efforts

If only it were as easy to lose weight as it is for me to gain weight....... I can practically feel my pants getting tighter just THINKING about that yummy, juicy burger and fries I would rather eat instead of the grilled chicken and veggies on my plate.

So the story begins back in the spring after I got pregnant. It's like my body remembered what was going on and immediately gained 6 lbs. Seriously, I think it said "Oh, I remember this. You need to have some extra padding. And by extra padding I mean a seriously big hiney and tummy. You know, to protect your poppyseed-sized baby in there." Fortunately it stopped at six pounds, but still.... it was an extra 6 lbs just hanging on my middle.

Then the whole thing went crazy when we lost the baby and I had to have that surgery. So then I was just lying around the house recovering and indulging in whatever I wanted to eat because food makes me feel better when I'm upset and I was definitely emotional over losing the baby and having a close brush with death. So I gained another 6 lbs.....

I finally started working out again at the end of July. I work out 4-5 days a week. I either run 4 miles or I bike 18 miles if I'm feeling sore (I think I'm getting shin splints so I've been biking more often lately to try to heal up and do something low-impact). I also lift weights and I watch what I eat. I can't believe how much effort I've had to put in to lose 7 1/2 lbs! I'm trying to stay motivated and I love how I feel (both physically and mentally) after a good hard workout, but I frequently feel frustrated that it's not coming off more quickly. Scott is the type of guy who takes about a year to gain 10 lbs (as opposed to what would easily take me 2-3 weeks if I'm not careful). Then he decides he's going to get back into shape, starts running again and 3 weeks later he's lost 15 lbs. I know I'm not supposed to compare myself to others but (and now I'm going to sound like a pre-teen) IT'S NOT FAIR!!!

Still, it's a work in progress and I feel like slowly but surely I am making progress. It just takes a LOT more effort this time around for some reason. And for the past 3 weeks I've been plagued by a mystery soreness in my lower legs that has been holding me back a bit. I can't tell if it's shin splints or not since it's not on the fronts of my shins, but on the inside, and it isn't a muscle I can stretch. I've googled things but still don't know what it could be, so I'm giving it another week or so and if it's not better I might head to the doctor.

Anyway, I hope you weren't bored by this post but it seems like working out and watching my weight is all I've been doing lately (besides being a wife and mom, obviously) and I couldn't think of anything else to blog about.

Ha ha - Marissa, I am sitting next to David who just ate a drumstick and is now devouring a huge bowl of ice cream with jelly on it! And, we just got done talking about the most amazing apple crisp that my mom made for us when we were in Arizona.

GIRL, I feel your pain! (Except that I don't because I haven't worked out since Olivia has arrived. Dear Lord, forgive me, because she's a few days shy of 6 months old.) But, I do feel your pain in that food is and has always been a comfort to me. And, now, when I am tired, I turn to food to give me some energy.

Keep up the good work - you look great, so it is all paying off. Now, can't wait until Thanksgiving to indulge in some feasts at your mom's house! :)

Wow....Welcome to my life! LOL I did just want to say though you can't ever compare yourself to guys. I actually read a study once where men and women did the exact same workout on a treadmill and elliptical machines, same level, same length of time...and the men burned more fat and calories. They said for a woman to burn the same amount of calories as a man would have to workout TWICE AS LONG.

Crazy eh?

men are built completely different and yeah it sucks and totally unfair - so when it comes to weightloss you kind of just have to ignore them. Will is like your hubby - he can lose 10 pounds in a week if he wants to.

You're doing amazingly well. Wow to have lost 7.5 pounds is awesome. It takes me forever just to lose that much.

I just bought "The Flat Belly Diet cookbook" and it is really cool. It's all about eating the right kinds of fats (avacadoes, olive oil, etc). So I'm going to be doing this more. You should check it out. It's a very Mediterranian way of eating.

I am so proud of you for continuing to work out. You have a better chance of the weight staying off when it comess off slowly. It is the crash diets that catapult people to even higher weights. You are adding muscle and increasing your metabolism so keep at it. I love you.

I feel your pain!! Really, I do. I have hypothyroidism so sometimes I feel like I have to work 3 times harder than most people to get results. It sucks. I found myself working out 5 days a week; 1 hour on the elliptical, 30 min doing strength training & 3 months later I had only lost 13 lbs. So frustrating!!
Then I went & hurt my achilles tendon... had to take 2 months off to let it heal. And it was bad, I couldn't even walk around the house. I slowly felt those pounds creep back on, not all of them but some. Sometimes I feel like its going to take me 2 years to reach my goal. UGH!
I do find some comfort in the Women's Health magazine. They run little success articles & it tells you that yes, it really did take this women 1 year to lose 50 lbs. That makes me feel a little better. But stick with it! You know it's better for your health in the long run!!

Ugh, sounds like my life! If I don't work out 5-6 times a week I gain weight...even eating as healthy as we do!!! Like I said before

STOP LOOKING AT THE DANG SCALE MARISSA!!!!

Seriously, that means nothing. If you're doing strength training and toning up you SHOULD GAIN WEIGHT, not lose it. Use your clothes, use your mirror. I don't have a clue what a weigh because I just do the "Jeans" test. If my jeans are tight, I need to step it up and cut back on the carbs (oh, my love). If they fit great then I know I'm on track.

SCALES ARE EVIL!

1st I LOVE your new banner picture

2nd I learned that men burn calories faster than women because they have more muscle. Muscles keep working even after you've stopped working out.

3rd Having the four kids I've had and one miscarriage has made it harder to lose the baby fat than after the 1st and 2nd child.

4th. I was working out 3 times a week and seeing little progress. But I was doing mostly cardio. Now I am lifting weights, much more than cardio and I am seeing results. Toning, shape of my body, and strength has significantly changed.

Anyway, I hope that helps.

Good luck!

I totally understand it is so frustrating. Jason is the same way and that Gifford genes seems to burn whatever fatty/sugar loaded foods they eat!
